Intuition Blocks: When you are trying to make a decision and hear yourself use the words “But, Well and If” beware that you may be blocking your intuition– just when you need it most!
I had a call from an old friend and colleague who’s the hiring manager for her division. While we were catching up she mentioned that she was having trouble deciding whether to hire someone.
She knew the woman from industry events and bumped into her at a restaurant recently and they got to talking. The woman said she was a superstar at her company but that she wasn’t happy there and was looking to make a change.
All that glitters is not gold
My former colleague asked her if she’d be interested in meeting to discuss the possibility of a move and she said yes.
They set up their meeting for a week from that day.
When that day arrived the woman cancelled a half our before the scheduled time. She had some fires to put out at work that day and had to cancel so they rescheduled for the following week.
When that day arrived she cancelled the meeting again this time two hours before citing that new problems arose that prevented her from making the meeting.
When the day for the third meeting came she cancelled again. She had some sudden personal problems to take care of this time but she rescheduled for a week later.
Don’t get steamrolled more than once
The day of the fourth scheduled meeting she didn’t cancel but arrived nearly an hour late. Her son was sick and she had to take him to the doctor so she wasn’t able to get there on time.
At the meeting she took phone calls and made my friend sit there and wait.
She spoke about herself and her needs for nearly 60 minutes without ever asking a question about the job or company my friend represented.
When she finally did ask a question she was interested in finding out if they would give her a personal assistant, customize several company wide systems to suit her needs and how much they would cover of her monthly expenses.
After my friend gave me the back story I asked her what the problem was?
To me it was clear that she should RUN not walk away from this prospective employee.
Desperation is not the mother of invention
My friend and former colleague was stuck on the fact that this woman was a superstar producer. She was desperate to hire someone like that to increase the bottom line of her department.
Her reply when I told her that she shouldn’t hire this woman was, “But if she does the kind of production she says she does she would be an asset to my group.”
“You don’t see a problem with her behavior and how many times she cancelled?” I asked.
“Well, if she does those kind of numbers every month it would make up for it.”
“Are you sure you’re not making excuses for her?
“Well……,” her voice trailed off.
“Okay,” I said, “Tell me what does your gut say? Give me one short sentence.”
Your gut knows
There was silence for a few moments and then I heard a long sigh, “I don’t think she would work out,” she said finally.
“I think you have your answer, don’t you?”
“Mmm, well she said she’ll show me her 1040 for last year to prove she did the kind of numbers she said she did.”
Obviously my friend was still contemplating hiring her anyway.
“Okay, good luck with this. I hope she works out for you.”
She hung up hastily after that.
You see she knew that she was going against her intuition and wanted to ignore it.
Whenever you start using qualifiers such as Well, But and If when trying to decide on something you’re making excuses and not listening to your intuition.

If you’ve felt a bit tongue-tied or suffered from fuzzy thinking for the last few weeks you are feeling the effects of Mercury Retrograde.
FYI: Mercury will be retrograde from June 7 through July 1.
When the planet Mercury, also known as the “Trickster,” which rules the thinking process, communication, short trips, transportation, commerce and contracts to name a few things, appears to go backward (retrograde) in the heavens it often creates delays and or mishaps in these areas of our lives.
Typical Mercury retrograde mishaps can result in…
delays of all kinds
making errors in your checkbook that cause you to be overdrawn
forgetting to put stamps on bills when you mail them
payments being charged twice to a credit card
fraudulent use of one of your credit cards
snafus and delays when traveling
problems with your car
problems with purchases of electronic devices and communication devices bought during this time
contracts having to be renegotiated or falling apart
spelling errors and editing errors
I’ve experienced every one of these during various Mercury retrogrades.
Mercury retrograde can cause us to overlook details and make mistakes due to the “fuzzy mindedness” we experience during this period. And it is for this very same reason that we also tend to overlook our intuitionduring this time too so beware.
My recent Mercury Retrograde mishap:
On the day Mercury went retrograde I was driving when I hit a pothole. Immediately an image came to me of a time years back when a wrench had pierced my tire and caused a flat tire. (That happened during a Mercury Retrograde too). I heard myself think, “I hope I don’t get a flat tire.”
I didn’t get a flat tire that day but a week later I did have a flat in the parking lot of the grocery store. As I pushed my cart toward the car I noticed the flat and saw glinting in the sun a shiny new nail wedged in between the treads of my tire.
After going through the aggravation of getting someone to change my tire and then taking the flat one to be repaired the next day it came to me.
When the mechanic showed me the extraordinarily long nail that he’d pulled out of my tire I suddenly knew exactly what had happened.
A neighbor was having a new roof put on his house. I needed the contractor’s number so I pulled up alongside of his truck to jot it down. Earlier, I had planned to walk down the street to get the number off the truck but a few things had cropped up at home and I didn’t have the time so I thought I’d get it on my way grocery store.
I had this weird feeling that I shouldn’t pull up so close to the truck because often contractors are careless and drop all sorts of things they never bother to pick-up but, I ignored it. I was in a rush and too focused on getting the phone number and that is most likely how this very, very long nail got into my tire.
My intuition tried to warn me to be careful about getting a flat twice but I had not paid attention.
During another Mercury retrograde period years ago I was driving a car that was approaching 9 years old and had been feeling for many months that it was time to buy a new one but had put it off. I had been saving money and wanted to wait until my next big commission check so I could by the car outright instead of financing it.
Suddenly the transmission slipped and I had no control over the accelerator! I carefully guided the car off the highway to the side and just as I did the transmission kicked back in. I was so relieved that I forgot all about the urgent feeling I had about buying a new car.
Two weeks later I was in a minor accident when a woman driving a huge Suburban hit the back of my car at the light. The damage to my car was declared a total loss and I had to practically give the car away for nothing to the dealer to take it off my hands. If I had listened to my intuition and gotten a new car when I first began getting those “urgent feelings” or at least right after my transmission slipped I would have been able to trade it in toward a new car.
Don’t let Mercury the Trickster mess with you during this retrograde make sure you pay extra special attention to your intuition from now through the first week of July.

Trusting our intuition often saves us from disaster. –Anne Wilson Schae
A heard a tiny whisper in my head saying, “Check again for your keys.”
I ignored it….and discovered I was locked out of my house when I got home at 11 pm. I had to get a locksmith to make an emergency visit to drill the lock. Ignoring my intuition cost me a lot of money.
Has something like this ever happened to you?
If you often find yourself in pickles like this you are ignoring your intuition.
Here are the top reasons you ignore your intuition:
1. Doubt. You play down the importance of this “voice.”
Antidote: You need to develop trust in your intuition. The only way to do this is to listen to these whispers and act upon them. The more you do and find they are “right” the more trust you’ll gain in your inner voice.
2. Lack of intention. Listening to your intuition is not a priority in your life.
Antidote: You’ve got to create an intention to develop your intuition. After all if you don’t make it a priority to listen this voice, who will? Recognize the importance of these messages from your intuitive wisdom and become conscious of them.
3. Monkey mind. You lack focus and clarity in your thinking.
Antidote: You have not set aside time each day tomeditate and clear your mind. Develop the habit of sitting in silence and listening for 20 minutes a day. Your thoughts will slow and your intuition will come through more loudly and clearly.
4. Insecurity. You listen to others (external voices) rather than yourself.
Antidote: You must develop your self-confidence and self-reliance. Pay attention to how you feel when you override your own instincts to listen to what others say you should do. Feeling “twisted” up inside like maybe it’s “wrong” is a signal that you’ve ignored your inner wisdom.
5. Multi-tasking. You are always in a hurry and doing too many things at once.
Antidote: Stop it! When you rush and try to accomplish too much at once you will not hear this subtle voice. Focus on one thing at a time. Take breaks where you walk away and give yourself a breather so your intuition can come through.
6. Distraction. You are never alone or have your cell phone, radio or television on at all times.
Antidote: If you cannot be alone with your self and need to have constant company, conversation or “noise” you will block your intuition from coming through. Turn everything off and spend at least an hour a day being “mindful” while you accomplish a simple task such as washing the dishes.
7. Self-medicating. You drink, do drugs or use food to shut out your inner voice.
Antidote: Using any substance to deal with your fears or quiet the critical internal voice will also block your intuition. Try journaling to get in touch with these inner stressors instead. When you write about your feelings you become conscious of what is driving you to self-medicate.
8. Toxic relationships. You live with or are involved with controlling or negative people.
Antidote: Find a way to cut off from or lessen the time you spend around toxic people. If you can’t get away make it a habit to have “alone” time. Toxic people poison your thoughts and undermine your confidence and self-esteem which muffles your intuition.
9. Control. You are a controlling personality who is attached to things turning out exactly as you think they should.
Antidote: Having to be “in control” all the time comes from having many fears. You fear what may happen if you don’t “control” the outcome. This is a no win way to live though. You cannot control everyone or everything. Learn to let go and allow the answers to bubble up naturally.
10. Negativity. You have a habit of thinking negatively.
Antidote: Look for the positive in everything. Stop looking for what can go wrong. Change your attitude and look for what can go right instead. You created the habit of thinking negatively and you can break that habit too – if you want to. Negative thinking overrides your intuition. You’ll hear it but you won’t believe it!
11. People pleasing. You put yourself last all the time.
Antidote: Stop putting the needs of others ahead of yourself all the time. Yes, we should help others and be selfless at times but, not at the expense of ignoring our own needs. People pleasing is a habit that absolutely shuts down your intuition.
Do you see yourself on this list? Can you think of any other habits or things you do that cause you to ignore your intuition? Share them with us in the comments.
If you notice that you are ignoring your intuition by doing one or more of these things I highly suggest you focus on the antidote. I cover these blocks to intuition extensively in my book, “The Intuition Principle.”

Our remedies oft in ourselves do lie
Which we ascribe to heaven.
~William Shakespeare, All’s Well That Ends Well
I had the opportunity to see the pre-release of, “The Cure Is,” which makes its world debut on November 11th.
The film,“The Cure Is..” is a fascinating look at how our modern way of life contributes to creating illness and the ways in which we can take back control of healing ourselves of those illnesses.
Modern life is stressful. We have little down time to relax nor recover from such constant stress. It’s no wonder that there has been a steady rise in cancer rates.
Most of us live in cities or suburbs and spend very little time in nature. Our man-made environment cuts us off from our intuition, and nature and her healing rhythms.
Your intuition is an agent of healing
If we were listening to our intuition we would know that this way of life is killing us. Our body is intelligent and knows what it needs to maintain good health.
Instead of listening to our inner wisdom we stay up far too late and get little sleep – ignoring the cries of our body. We eat mountains of processed foods that are high in sodium, sugar, unhealthy fats and carbohydrates.
Our stressful lifestyle revolves around constant “busyiness” and the need to compete to be successful and productive. With such an out of balance life we look to fast foods to save time and junk foods as self-medication to deal with stress.
The stress of living at such a fast pace results in many negative emotions such as depression, anger, blame, resentment and bitterness, to name a few. We never have enough time; we are late and always running. We are in a constant state of “fight or flight,” where calm and peace elude us.
We criticize, refuse to forgive and and judge others harshly which causes strains in relationships. We are also harsh with ourselves and lack self-love. All of these emotional states impact and undermine our health.
The stress we live under and resulting negative emotions is a vicious cycle. We assume it is the normal way of living because so many of us live this way – but it isn’t. We can take back control of our lives and our health if we stop and become conscious of what we have been doing to ourselves.
When we change the way we see things our lives will change accordingly
The Cure Is…is a film that will help you to step back and become conscious of how your lifestyle and worldview impact your health. Your DNA is not destiny – you have much more power over your future and your health than you think.
YOU possess the power to change the trajectory of your health by making a shift in your thinking and how you perceive the world around you. Your miraculous body is designed to heal itself. But first, you must stop assaulting it with with negative emotions and poor lifestyle choices.
The film features notable experts, scientists, doctors and evolutionary leaders such as:
“Eye of newt, and toe of frog, Wool of bat, and tongue of dog, Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting, Lizard’s leg, and howlet’s wing,– For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.” —William Shakespeare from “Macbeth”
There are penalties for ignoring your intuition.
Okay, I’m no “witch” like the witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth – I’m just a financial salesperson with a highly developed sense of intuition but, I should have known better…..
After many delays and mishaps, the physical book is finally available for purchase. I’m still waiting for the digital formatting because now the company handling this has “disappeared” so that means no Kindle/Nook/iPad book just yet. I hope to have this rectified in the next two weeks.
While I loved the writing the book, the self-publishing program didn’t meet my expectations.
