Tune into your intuition and you’ll be more successful in three very important ways.
Intuitive Development Increases Intelligence
All answers are already inside you. There is a part of you that is quietly witnessing and recording every moment of your life. This part runs 24/7 taking in incredible amounts of data that the conscious mind isn’t aware of. When you are faced with a decision all of this data is mined instantaneously and the answer catapulted at warp speed to inform the body. Science bears this out. In studies where skin conductance responses (measuring perspiration) on the palms were measured findings show that the body’s intelligence responds correctly to answers before the conscious mind ever forms an answer.
Once you learn how to pick up on these subtle cues from the body you gain access to a vast storehouse of intelligence for your life.
Makes Decision Making Easier
Listening for and hearing your intuition is skill that requires practice. Once mastered it’s a sign that you’re capable of rising above the din of your thoughts and the clutches of negative emotions. Most of our thoughts are dictated by what is outside of us and what we think we “should do” and this is is usually where we make our biggest “decision making mistakes. Negative emotions such as fear and anger reinforce limiting beliefs which is why being constantly whipsawed by these emotions results in making wrong choices and decisions as well.
Focusing on your intuition doesn’t mean that you no longer need your reasoning powers or to feel emotions. It shows that you are not at their mercy instead, you are in conscious control of how you react.
When your mind is quiet and free of distractions you easily hear your intuition more easily. Think of the quiet mind like a still pond. When a pebble is thrown in the center of the pond you easily take notice of the ripples it sends out. If you were to throw a pebble in the water during a rains storm however, you would never be able to distinguish the rings from the raindrops. Someone who hears their intuition easily has learned how to still their mind like the quiet pond so that when an intuitive thought strikes they easily take notice.
Improves Your Confidence
Acting upon your intuition takes guts. If you have to make an important decision and all the data points you to another decision entirely you have to be pretty gutsy to follow your intuition anyway. Most highly successful individuals will say that some of their most celebrated decisions were based on following their gut instincts. And, that despite the data and advice from others they proceeded based on a “feeling” they had that this was the right way to go. This shows great courage and confidence.
The more you develop your intuition and trust it the more confident you will become in your own instincts. And, as a consequence the more confident you are in trusting your intuition the more often you’ll hear it and be accurate. Will you always be right? No, there are going to be times when you’re wrong most likely, when the rational mind puts its own spin and biases on the raw data of your intuition. Intuition and logic are not inherently compatible. You can’t measure the validity of a raw intuitive flash of inspiration by how rational it is. If your intuition appeals to your sense of logic it has most likely been tampered with by the logical mind.
The more you use your intuition the more you will perfect the art of distinguishing it from the other voices that compete for your attention in the mind. Your intuition is like any other “muscle” in your body. The more you use it the better developed it becomes and the more loudly it will “speak.”
Many of the mistakes attributed to intuition are really attributable to not having practiced enough to differentiate it from our other thoughts. What we followed wasn’t intuition but a thought, perhaps because we allowed the rational mind to slip in because we thought this idea was “logically” the right thing to do.
Intuition is Always A Shortcut To The Answer
That’s the trick you see, to understand that intuition has nothing to do with what is right or rational at all. Intuition doesn’t come from the rational mind that thinks sequentially and where thoughts are labeled as right or wrong. Intuition bypasses the thinking mind and travels the path of our feelings—and feelings arise fast!
Intuitive feelings spring forth at lightening speed from your memory banks. Stored data from “Column A” and bits of information from “Column C and B” are pulled from the mind’s storehouse and reformulated into a completely new and innovative idea or solution. Many new and innovative ideas never seem “logical” at the beginning, do they? This is the reason why you might label it as illogical but, that doesn’t automatically make it wrong.
The ego is concerned with being “right” so it will impose the test of “reason” upon an innovative idea and deem it illogical or wrong. When the ego and reason team up and tamper with your intuition you second guess yourself and think, “this is a crazy idea and it won’t work.” In its place you come up with another idea that you assume is also from your intuition and that is the idea that turns out to be wrong.
Intuition isn’t wrong it’s when we filter it through the lens of reason (what we think we should do) that creates the distorted idea which always turns out to be wrong.
Develop your intuitive listening skills and gain access to more intelligence for your life, better decision making ability and improved confidence.

There are so many good reasons to develop your intuition in addition to hearing your own inner guidance more clearly.
Setting the intention to connect daily to your intuition leads to a reduction in the distracting, fearful and often sabotaging voices in your mind. That allows the true voice of your own inner wisdom to surface above the noise.
Tuning in to your inner wisdom helps you find your purpose in life, develop better boundaries and say “no,” feel joyful and more satisfied, reduce stress levels, have better focus, less worry and more peace of mind and improve memory and decision-making to name just some of the benefits I wrote about in my best selling book,“The Intuition Principle.”
Another benefit of developing your intuition is gaining a greater sense of your own power.
Developing your intuition brings clarity around who you really are and what you were meant to do in this life. When you’re aligned with your purpose you become clear on your value and that leads to to greater self empowerment.
When you’re self empowered you take action toward your goals and become an advocate for yourself to ensure that you live a fulfilling and meaningful life and living up to your full potential. You stop looking outside of yourself and relying on others to advocate for you or to make you happy or fill you up. You become self reliant, self sufficient and completely whole in every sense of the word. You take responsibility for every aspect of your life.
Realizing that your purpose benefits others helps you become more confident in yourself. Having more confidence means you falter less in your decision making and make progress more easily toward achieving your goals.
Confidence also comes from hearing your inner guidance clearly and successfully following it. Each time you follow your intuition and it leads to a successful outcome you develop greater faith, trust and confidence in yourself.
More Confidence and Self empowerment
When you feel empowered you take more action to achieve your goals and taking more action is what leads to success. Your less “confused, and stuck in overwhelm” because you have a clear sense of where you want to go and the confidence that you can get there. You’re not held back by insecurities of “not knowing what to do.”
Self empowerment gives you the confidence to know that you’ll take the right action to learn how to do what you need to do to get it done. You’re not always waiting for something outside of yourself to “get started.” When you lack confidence and feel disempowered you’re always in a “getting ready to get ready mode” instead of actually starting something. “Getting ready to get ready” is the illusion of thinking you’re doing something.
When you’re not clear on your purpose and the value you bring to the world you feel indecisive and shaky when making decisions. You do all sorts of things like “busywork” that don’t actually amount to anything because you’re unsure of what to do. This lack clarity and confusion on what action to take next is a vicious cycle of not being sure and either doing the same things over and over again or suddenly changing directions without putting any real thought into it. This cycle of feeling so unsure of yourself and doubting your direction, purpose and value are really disempowering and just ends up making you feeling worse.
The way out of this vicious cycle is to go within and build a strong connection to your inner wisdom; your intuition and letting it guide you. Working on your intuition is a practice of staying ever present and being mindful.
11 Reasons to Develop Your Intuition:
1. Reduction in the distracting, fearful and often sabotaging voices in your mind.
2. Tuning in to your inner wisdom helps you find your purpose in life
3. Develop better boundaries and be able to say “no.”
4. Feel joyful and more satisfied with your life
5. Reduced stress levels
6. Have better focus
7. Less worry and more peace of mind
8. Improved memory
9. Better at decision-making
10. Increases confidence
11. Become more empowered

Intuition is information that spontaneously appears in our awareness without any conscious effort on our part.
Intuition is our own inner wisdom and guidance. It is a small voice we hear often like a whisper, that gently nudges us to make the right choices and decisions in our lives.
It can tell us when we should be wary of a person or warn us against doing something and when we should act on an opportunity. It comes to us spontaneously and many times feels like an “aha” moment.
Intuition can also be the sense you have that someone is staring at you or walking behind you, before you even turn around and meet their gaze. In this application intuition is a sensory experience about the environment around you. It’s no different than the other five senses we rely upon – it’s just more subtle which is why some people are not aware of it.
Where does intuition come from?
Your mind searches for the answers hidden in long forgotten memory banks. When it locates the answer it deposits the solution in its entirety into your awareness, which is why often when the answer comes to us we experience intuition as a “light bulb moment.”
How to tell the difference between the voice of intuition and other thoughts
Intuition makes you “feel good” about doing something. You will experience a sense of “certainty” about it. The matter will feel “settled.” It will feel right and give you sense of connecting all the dots. Always go back to how this “voice” makes you feel.
Once the answer comes to you, if it came from your intuitive mind you won’t have any lingering doubts. You’ll trust it and feel sure and, you’ll feel it directly in your gut.
Deep down inside we always know
It’s only after we screw up by ignoring our intuition that we admit that we did in fact, “know.” Before we are forced to admit it, we’ve usually been in denial with our heads in the sand pretending everything was going okay. Does this sound familiar?
A sure sign you’re in denial is if you keep asking yourself the same question over and over and get the same answer but, respond with a lot of “yeah, buts.”
What you need to do is get radically honest with yourself. Put aside all your rationalizations and excuses and ask to connect to the “truth” of the matter. You’ll recognize when you’ve connected to the “truth” because your gut will feel as if its been “stabilized.”
Rationalizations are akin to lies we tell ourselves to make things “okay.” Rationalizing is not “real” therefor it has no weight, no real substance and cannot make your gut feel as if you are standing on stable ground.
Where most of us get tripped up
When our intuition gives us an answer we don’t like our ego tries to confuse us by making us doubt our intuition.
When you don’t like the answer you got usually it’s because you haven’t yet assimilated the lesson you need to learn from the situation that you’re looking for answers about. Intuition is often a “shortcut” to answers you need so, if you ask for intuitive guidance you’ll get the answer whether you’re ready to act upon it or not.
When a thought comes from the ego, often you’ll feel as if you “should do” it. You’ll be aware of your rational mind recounting the reasons why you ought to do it – why it “makes sense.” Keep track of the “yeah buts” that’s a big clue that you are rationalizing.
If you feel the voice is advising you to do something out of fear, or lack or that you should do this over that – it is NOT your intuition. This is the clearest way to know the difference.
It is never our intuition that is wrong but, what we mistake for our intuition.
The key is this…
They key is your gut. You’ve got to feel it in your gut. If you don’t feel it in your gut it’s not your intuition – it’s your mind rationalizing. Keep this in mind and you’ll distinguish between your thoughts and your intuition.

I first realized I was “different” when I was eight.
My sister, best friend and I were outside playing. My friend nonchalantly mentioned, “Did you know that XXX’s Daddy died?” I immediately heard a “voice” say, “He died of liver disease” which I repeated to my sister and best friend.
Later I told my mother that XXX’s Daddy had died of “liver disease.”
I recall my mother’s reaction as she demanded I tell her, “Who told you that?”
It was clear she was angry that I knew this which, I didn’t understand. I tried to tell her that I just “knew” but she wouldn’t believe me. She kept asking who told me?
She thought I was lying which upset me but I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know who spoke to me in my mind? It was very confusing to an 8 year old.
I also understand now that back then people didn’t talk about alcoholism. It was taboo. My mother wasn’t so much angry at my “knowing” as she was worried about me going around the neighborhood saying that this man had died of “liver disease.”
Now I know that “voice” was my intuition. At 8 years old I had never heard that word. All I knew was that there was something different about me and how I got information that my mother thought was “wrong” so clearly it must be, right?
This started my life long struggle with trusting and following my intuition.
When I began my journey of sharing how listening to my intuition would impact my life five years ago (January 9th was PbI’s 5 year anniversary) I had no idea where I was headed.
My plan was to do the “opposite” of what I had been doing my entire life and chronicle how it affected me in my new blog: Powered by Intuition (which was originally called Mystic Musings & Meditations).
By 2010 I’d had enough of making the wrong decisions and being unhappy. I decided that from that moment on I would listen to my intuition for every single solitary decision I made.
I had gone into the wrong career, studied the wrong subject in college, married the wrong person, not gone on all the adventures I dreamed of like living in Europe and on and on and as a result I was stuck in a life I didn’t like at all. I realized that the problem was that I hadn’t followed my heart–my intuition. I had listened to other people for fear of making mistakes, being wrong and done what I thought “rational” and “sensible” people did instead.
Following my intuition from now on would be own my experiment of “doing the opposite.”
If you’re a Seinfeld fan you might recall the episode where George Costanza decides to do the exact opposite of what he’d been doing his whole life. He realized that every decision he made in his life had been wrong so, he does the opposite and and his life turns around.
So how has five years of following my intuition turned out?
Pretty good. The more I followed my intuition the more great things came into my life.
Of course, there were time I ignored it and made mistakes but every mistake only made it easier to listen the next time.
It led to my becoming a published best-selling author, speaker and mentor teaching others how to find their purposeand how to create a lifestyle business like mine around their purpose if they so choose.
Teaching others how to follow their intuition to create lives of meaning and purpose by living “The Intuition Principle” deeply fulfills me and is what makes me the happiest.
So here’s to five years of intuition led living!
To celebrate this milestone I’d like to give something special to the Powered by Intuition community.

When your next chapter unfolds elegantly it means that you have been listening to your intuition and taking the right steps. It shows that you’ve not been resistant to the messages and signs you’ve been getting. You know what you’re next steps are and regardless of whether they’re difficult or stretch you beyond you’re comfort zone you’ve been taking them.
If you became aware of your next chapter like I did – with a punch in the gut – it shows you’ve been ignoring the signs your intuition has been desperately trying to make you aware of.
Can you relate to my story?
Near the end of 2013 I vowed that I would finally quit my job in financial sales in 2014 or die trying. (Yes, I actually said that to myself…..I’m really passionate when I want something). So I jumped into training after training…I became a coach and took numerous marketing, copy writing, lead generation and advertising courses to ensure that I would make a living. I quadrupled my subscribers and replaced my work income plus more….and I quit! Mission accomplished. Yay!
Ignoring Your Intuition is Foolish
Here’s where the story goes awry…as 2014 drew to a close I was exhausted. I had been working seven days a week for 10-12 hours each day to accomplish everything I set out to do. I worked this many hours in order to keep up with all the courses and homework and to apply the lessons I was learning to my business.
Around Halloween I was out taking a walk when I noticed that I had been repeating the phrase, “Give me a break” in my self-talk.
Knowing that everything we think and feel emotionally is telegraphed to the Universe I immediately went into course correction mode and restated: Dear Universe, I don’t mean that I want anything “broken” in my life I mean that I’d like a vacation and a rest and to stop working so hard.
I thought, that’s that. I’ve handled things with Universe.
The problem though is that I did NOT take a vacation even though my body and mind were screaming for one.
I kept working and dragging myself through each day in order to keep up. (I had been teaching people to find their life’s purpose by following their intuition. After finding their purpose many wanted to create an intuitive business or healing practice around it so, I began teaching entrepreneurs to use marketing and lead generation to get more clients.)
When someone asks for my help I have a hard time saying “No,” even when I’m overburdened.
By the time Thanksgiving arrived I was not feeling well at all. No matter how much sleep I got I always looked haggard.
The Universe was no longer playing with me. I had ignored the telltale signs for too long.
How the Universe Whacked Me Into Waking Up
My body became the means for the Universe to give me a huge wake up call. I got diverticulitus a painful condition of the lower intestine that lasted for nearly two weeks but I still kept working.
My 17+ year old cat, Punkin, stopped grooming himself. He had always sat on my lap when I worked on the computer but now he would only lay on the floor next to my chair.
My computer accumulated a series of viruses that became so bad I had to replace the hard drive and lost the use of it for nearly 10 days.
Right before Christmas I drove Punkin to my veterinarian’s office crying the whole way there. It nearly killed me to do it but, I had to release him from his misery.
Don’t ask the Universe for a Break unless you’re ready to take one!
As I drove home with the empty carrier on the passenger seat I realized Punkin’s downward health spiral was a mirror of what had been happening to me over the last year that I’d chosen to ignore.
The Universe had stepped in to create the break I desperately needed because I refused to do it on my own.
For good measure, the Universe threw in a dose of the flu right after Christmas.
The Universe is always sending you signs
When you refuse to listen to your intuition and follow the signs the Universe will whack you on the head like it did me. I knew I was overtired and needed to rest but my need to accomplish everything on my “to-do list” caused me to resist the message.
The events of your life always mirror what is happening within you. If you look with an open mind you will see the signs everywhere.
What messages is your intuition sending you about your next chapter? What must come to and end? What is your next step? Is it time to release unhealthy habits, relationships or a career that no longer suits you? Is your intuition whispering to you that it’s time to step out and create your own business?
My intuition has spoken and I’m listening. My next chapter is to find a balance between doing the work I’m passionate about and rest. I love sharing information on following your intuition and I also love helping heart-centered entrepreneurs create profitable businessesaround their passion but I realize I must make more time for my own self-care in 2015.
If you yearn to develop your intuition there is no better class than life itself!Your intuition is a sense just like the other five senses you have. You must learn how to rely upon it to navigate your life just as surely as you use your sight, hearing, touch, taste and sense of smell. When you listen it will always, always lead you in the right direction.
How to use your intuition to lead you to your next chapter:
1. Pay attention to the whispers in the back of your mind. What are you being called to do? What are you being pulled toward? What are you being pushed away from?
2. Ask yourself if you have been purposely ignoring addressing certain things in your life. What do you have resistance around?
3. Get clarity. Go for a long walk in nature. If you meditate go within and listen. When your mind is quiet you will hear the whispers of your intuition.
4. Set your alarm an hour earlier and get up and journal. Start with this prompt: My next chapter is about…..keep writing until you feel you’ve emptied your mind onto the page.
5. Go to your closest friend and share what you came up with in journaling about your next chapter. Ask them if they feel you’re on target. Sometimes you need an outside opinion to confirm you’re on the right path.
2015 is here and it’s a blank slate. How will you fill it? Share your next chapter here in the comments.

So today I’m opening up the PbI mailbag once again to address this frequently asked question.
5 Reasons Why You Can’t Hear Your Intuition
1. The first thing you need to understand about Intuition is that it’s quite subtle especially when you first begin to work with it. It presents itself in very “ordinary” ways that can easily be overlooked.
2. You have the power to turn up the volume of your intuition and to mute it as well. You are always in control….even when you feel as if you’re not getting the answers you desire. Most likely you’re getting the intuitive information you’ve asked for but, you’re suppressing this information. More on this below in #4.
3. Developing intuition is like any other thing we set out to accomplish in our lives; our intention is key. You must create the intention of hearing and then following your intuition in your life if you wish to hear it loud and clear.
4. Another factor you need to understand about your Intuition is that when you’re attached to the outcome you will unconsciously suppress this information from your mind if it conflicts with the outcome your desire.
5. The last thing on this list you must absolutely understand is this: Human Beings can rationalize and justify almost anything if there is a reason to do so! Read the following two examples and this will become very clear.
Say you suffer from symptoms such as occasional dizziness, blurred vision, brain fog, motor skills issues and and neck and back pain. You go from doctor to doctor but none find anything seriously wrong. You are prescribed muscle relaxants for your back and neck pain but the symptoms persist. Your family is tired of hearing your complaints and are starting to believe most of it is in “your head.”
You decide the doctors must be right, that it must be all in your head and take your meds and go about your life.
As the symptoms persist you can’t shake the feeling in your gut that something is wrong. You rationalize it away though by thinking that it’s just fear talking and not a real health issue.
Months later you have a seizure and an MRI reveals a serious problem in the brain.
Your immediate reaction is, “I knew something wasn’t right!”
You realize that you let yourself override your intuition because you rationalized that you couldn’t possibly know more than the medical establishment.
You meet a new love interest and start living together. You get along well and enjoy a really nice lifestyle together. You love to travel together and enjoy many of the same interests.
This person is head over heels in love with you but you don’t feel the same although you care for them a great deal. Eventually, they start talking marriage. Your friends and family tell you that this person is really great and how lucky you are to have found each other. They point out all the good qualities the person has and you can’t disagree either….they are a really exceptional person.
The problem is that you can’t make up your mind what to do. You get stuck in an endless loop of considering how “lucky” you are to have this person in your life and how wonderful all your friends and family say this person is. Yet something holds you back from jumping into the marriage.
You finally say yes and get married. Two years later the marriage is over.
You now realize the reason you held back from jumping into the marriage was because you were never in love with your partner in the first place. This person “checked off” all the boxes on your ideal mate list except the one about being in love! You settled and talked yourself into it.
How to Begin Hearing Your Inner Voice, AKA Intuition:
1. Journal. It’s easy to get in touch with your feelings when you journal. I wrote about this extensively in my book, “The Intuition Principle.” Journaling is a safe place to reveal your true feelings. Writing will also help you organize your thoughts and sort out what you believe over what society has imposed upon you. A good way to get to the bottom of your own feelings is to write out the question you want an answer to at the top of the page then just start writing without censoring yourself. When you feel that sense of completion – stop. Go back to read what you’ve written and you will be amazed at the wisdom that has poured out of you.
2. Meditate. When you make the time to get quiet every day your intuition will get louder and clearer. The busyness of every day life is distracting. You must create an empty space in the mind where your intuition can come through. Find a quiet and private place where you can close your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes without being disturbed. Focus your attention on counting your breaths until you reach the number 50. At the 50th breath notice how you feel. Your thoughts should have slowed down. You should feel alert yet relaxed. Try to remain in that state. If your mind begins to race go back to counting the next 5o breaths. These relaxed moments where your thinking has slowed down is where your intuition will begin to come through. Ask a question you’d like guidance on then sit quietly and listen.
3. Take back your power. Realize that if a feeling or thought persists it persists for a reason. If you feel in your gut that you’re not okay with the diagnosis from your doctor get another opinion. If you hesitate to make a decision even if everyone you know says it’s right, there is a reason. Don’t go along with the what other people think if you have a nagging thought or feeling that you should do something different. The truth is we’re raised to listen to authority figures but that doesn’t mean they’ll be right every time.
Where have you overridden your intuition in your life? How did it turn out? What will you do differently from now on?
