Is spirit communication real?
Years ago while doing a reading for a lady I clearly “saw” in my mind’s eye, an elderly woman.
While internal seeing was not unusual for me – this was different.
The elderly woman I was “seeing” in my mind’s eye started to move around and speak to me. That had never happened before in a reading.
She showed me a big pot of pasta sauce cooking on her stove and then started speaking with a heavy Italian accent while pointing her wooden spoon to punctuate her words.
When I described this scene to my client she responded right away by saying that it was her grandmother. And then she said, “But, she’s dead.”
I really didn’t know what to say to my client at that point.
It never occurred to me that I might have actually “seen” a spirit. I also had no idea what a medium was back then either.
I assumed I was picking up a memory from my client and left it at that.
Things of this nature kept happening sporadically throughout the years. I never gave it a second though, until five years ago when the incidents began to happen frequently. It was at this point that I decided to see what might be happening to me and I began to learn about mediumship.
How do we know if spirit communication is real or not?
You could argue that all the information a medium picks up is contained in the memory of the client. There is no proof that is not so.
The conventional thinking on how mediumship works
Mediumship is mind to mind communication. The spirit will telepathically communicate with the medium and transmit information to pass along to the client.
We know for sure it’s not a memory when the spirit passes along evidence that the client has no knowledge of but, is later verified by someone in the client’s family.
I gave a reading to to my friend Eric Watermolen, and during the reading several of his wife’s deceased relatives showed up. He was aware of some of the details but, most of it had to be verified by his wife and mother-in-law later.
Mediums pass along information to clients that cannot be verified until they return home and question other family members all the time. I would call that “real.”
I would also go so far as to say that if a medium is given one piece of information that cannot be found in the client’s memory and is only verifiable by another family member not present at the session than, all the information that a medium gets is from the spirit.
When a spirit starts communicating the medium gets flooded by impressions. The spirit works very hard to try to “impress” the communication upon the medium telepathically. If a medium were only reading someone’s memories they wouldn’t “flood” the medium’s mind.
The client who goes to see a medium is not sitting there “sending” out their memories. The client is in a receptive state waiting for the medium to bring back the details from the spirit.
Yes, spirit communication is real.
Are there frauds out there? Yes, of course.
How to know if you are working with a “real” medium.
The medium should not ask you for name, age, birth sign or address of the person.
They should be able to describe the person’s physical appearance and/or personality to a degree that you “know” who it is. Some mediums do not “see” but, “hear” so you may not be given a blow by blow description of the person. The point is that you are given enough information to “know” from the details who the medium is connecting to.
The medium should be able to give you some specific some details. For example they might tell you what the person died from or what their hobbies were or where they worked or how many children they had.
They should also be able to pass along a shared memory or two that the client would recall. If the spirit has a personal message for the client the medium should be able to pass that along as well.
The proof is in the “Spirit art”
One of my dear friends, Randi Silber, brought my father through last year during a reading exchange. She’s a gifted medium and talented spirit artist. Here’s the likeness she drew of my dad while communicating with him. Below is a photo of me and my father from before he got ill.

Hi Angela:
The photo of you and your father is very sweet.
Thanks for sharing the video of Coral Polge. I had never heard of her. Is she still alive?
I have done lots of readings, but mainly psychic. I don’t think I have ever worked with a medium that I can recall.

Hi Wendy,
It’s so nice to see you here. I hope all is well with you?
Thank you. I’m glad you like the photo of me and my dad. It’s a very special one since it’s the last one I have of me and him together. It was taken in 2006 and he passed in 2009.
I don’t know if Coral Paige is still alive or not? I don’t think so though.
A mediumship reading differs from a pshyic reading as all the information comes from spirit rather than psychically from the reading the energy of the client.

Hi Betsy,
It’s so wonderful to have a spirit visitation through a dream.
That is the most common way most of us experience communication with “the other side.”
Let me know what you think of this remarkable video!
Fascinating stuff, Angela. So when a medium agrees to perform a reading for someone, does the spirit usually oblige and want to communicate with the client? Or does it depend on the spirit’s relationship with the client in life? I’m curious about how much people in spirit form maintain their personalities and prejudices from life.
Chris,
These are excellent questions!
When a person acts as a “medium” they can only broadcast what is “on,” so to speak. So, if a spirit is not willing or interested in coming through – they won’t. This is why you cannot guarantee to a client that you will be able to “get their mother on the line.” lol
A true medium will open themselves up to the presence of spirit and bring through whomever “steps forward.” If after a time the client has not heard from the person they truly wished to communicate with the medium can ask for the name and ask if this spirit is available and willing to connect. They may or may not come through. I’ve had it happen both ways.
I wouldn’t go into a sitting with someone and ask for “Michael Jackson” to come through just because the client was a fan. As in life, Michael Jackson would have no personal reason to speak to me or the client.
It really does depend on the client’s relationship to the deceased. The spirit is still conscious, aware and retains their intelligence. They also retain their personality for some time. Many lose their prejudices when they transcend the body and see “life” from a broader non-human perspective. But, some are strong willed and do not lose their prejudices right away. I have no idea what the percentages are but, we like to think that most people are “good” so, I’d say that speaks to there being more people who release their prejudices upon death than not.
Don’t think I ever saw that drawing of your dad. Amazing. Great pic of you btw.
Sometimes my dogs, in parrticular Zsa Zsa, barks at absolutely nothing. She will look at a specific place…the landing at the top of the steps and just start barking as if somethng were there. I used to think it was headlights from a passing car or a reflection, but then I started to pay attention…and I saw nothing, no lights, no material movement of any kine that might start her barking. I’m convinced she sees ghosts. Based on how she reacts/poises herself, if you did not know otherwise you would swear someone was standing there.
Roe,
What you might do next time is get a camera and start taking pictures.
The camera sometimes catches what we can’t see.
I would bet there is a spirit there.
Check out what my friend Mani captured on camera one night in her bedroom when she felt the presence of spirit:

What an interesting read!
I am curious to find out typically what kind of messages are being relayed, based on your experiences. Also, where are they now? And why are they still around? Do they get reborn?
I have got a number of “strange” encounters with different types of spirits myself and other than dreams, they usually happen during healing sessions – whether I am doing them for others or whether others are doing for me.
Hi Evelyn,
Great questions!!
The most common messages are: I’m okay.
& I love you.
When a spirit disconnects from the body their consciousness exists only on the energetic level. This plane of existence is within our own so they don’t really go anywhere.
Of course, I’m not a scientist but, from what I can comprehend when the spirit sheds the physical body – time and gravity are no longer relevant as it no longer has any “physical mass” with which to make an impact upon the time-space continuum. They exist only in the present moment and that plane of existence is within our own 4 dimensional plane.
They are still around because “energy never dies” it just changes form. We are energetic beings at our core. Our body is only held together by our consciousness until we die. Then our energy of our consciousness leaves the body and it decomposes. So, the energy changed form and they are still “around.”
If you mean are they “hanging around” watching and following our every move every day – the answer is no. They exist in the present moment so, if you were to think about your grandmother and send her love and blessings “she” the conscious essence of her, would become aware of this after a time and she could by just thinking about you be “present” within your awareness.
It is my understanding that the soul of the personality that (for example) was your grandmother could choose whether they wish to be reincarnated or not. If they feel they want to experience the physical life again and be exposed to more “learning” then yes, they would choose to be reborn.
During a healing session you are really open and working with the spirit realm. The healing energy (as you well know) doesn’t come from us but, through us. So, I’m not surprised at all that you’ve felt the presence of spirit while doing healing work.
Very interesting post, Angela! I am a big believer! My grandparents, with whom I was very close, often come back and visit me in my dreams. The dreams are so real that I often wonder….
I’m looking forward to watching the video next!
Thanks!
Hi Betsy,
I’m so glad you enjoyed this. There is really more about the Universe that we don’t know than what we know for sure!
I believe in spirit communication because, as a medium, I’ve experienced it.
Dreams are a huge way that spirits communicate with us all the time. It’s so wonderful to wake up from a dream and feel that sense of closeness after having a “visitation.”
Thank you for your post. I’ve had few experiences of having a spirit come to me in a dream with a message. One involved a friend from college I hadn’t seen in a couple of years, who appeared in a vivid dream on the night he died. He sat still, while across from him at a table his ex-girlfriend sat crying. I friendly with both, but wasn’t very close with either party. I found out within 48 hours that he had died in a motorcycle accident thousands of miles away (and the girl in the dream was very distraught for some time). Perhaps the most interesting of these dreams was when I was visiting a friend whose mother had tragically passed away suddenly a few months prior. That night as I slept in her family room, a dreamt that I woke up and walked into her hallway, turned and saw her mother in a room (that was not there in her house). I had met her mother before and recognized her, she turned toward me and said “I’m Okay.” The really interesting thing is that she was smoking, ironing and watching tv – these were all things she did frequently, but I had no knowledge of any from the brief contacts I had had with her several years prior. Convenying her message to my friend brought her some comfort, and the details made it more valuable to her. I have spoken about these dreams before with friends, but have never written them down and am getting chills as I recall the experiences! Do you have any advice as to what made me receptive to these messages and how I might develop it further?
Kat,
Often when we have mediumistic tendencies we recieve communication for spirits through dreams.
This certainly sounds like what is happening to you.
A meditation practice will help you learn to control your mind anad open up your intuitive faculties further.
I also read: So you want to be a Medium: A Down to Earth Guide
This is an excellent book for you to look into mediumship.
Angela, loved this. There really are more things under heaven and earth than we have dreamed of…to misquote Shakespeare.
I had amazing experiences at the Institute of psychic studies in London and it’s so true that mediums can tell you things, sometimes only you might know, and sometimes I learned things I didn’t know and had to check with my Mum…to find that out it was true.
Fascinating post.

Dear Elle,
I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. I have been studying with tutors from AFCM for a few years now.

Hi Angela,
I had a few of those moments where I had to verify with other family members during the mediumship reading you did for me. One case was where my wife’s grandmother was showing you an assembly line. My wife and I had no idea she worked an assembly line. when I asked my mother-in-law she was able to confirm that fact, she worked an assembly line a long time ago, long before either of us was born. I also had a few people that came through that I was completely unable to identify, but when I shared this with my wife and mother-in-law, they were able to identify them right away.
Hi Eric,
It was such a joy to do a mediumship reading for you!
You were such a good sport too. I didn’t realized that you didn’t have a lot of people in spirit when we did the reading.
If I had known I might have suggested to you that we include your wife in the reading.
Your wife’s grandmaother was a strong personality. I felt her determination and pluck come right through to me.
I’m also remembering how she kept showing me jello and the “jello cakes” too! lol
Angela, I do believe that spirit communication is real.
A week after my friend Rodney passed away, a friend gave me a healing session and we had to pretend that he was sitting next to me on the sofa.
Halfway through the session the plant leaves next to where his assigned space started moving gently! There was no logical explanation for this as all the windows were shut and there was no breeze in the room.
I would love to receive more communication from spirits:-)
Hi Arvind,
There are more things that science cannot yet explain about our existence than can be explained!
I do believe someday we will understand more about the dimension that spirit exists in and how to communicate directly!
xoxo,
Angela
I believe in this. I haven’t had the experience of a mediumship reading (though I would love to!) Spirit communication is real. I can bring someone up from the past in my family, especially after a meditation session. I have asked my Mom for a recipe and wrote it down. It is easy to think of this as bringing something up from the sub-conscious, but I’ve had instances when my Grandmother just appeared and told me things I could never have known otherwise, or from any other source. It is an amazing feeling. And I love it. I find that I always have a headache after I “see” someone.
Posts like this fascinate me, Angela. Thank you! Hugs!
Hi Vidya,
I wasn’t too sure about mediumship until it happened to me. I think when we experience it – it changes us and opens our mind.
Vidya, you may be a medium yourself you know. If you can bring someone up after meditating – it sounds to me as if you have mediumistic abilities.
It is amazing, isn’t it? You feel such a special energy when you’re communicating with spirit. It is awesome.
You shouldn’t have a headache though?
I’m so glad you liked this post!
