If you’re anything like me, you may have been raised to believe that self-love had nothing to do with success.
Paying too much attention to yourself was just plain shameful and smacked of conceit.
And, only weak individuals who needed to rely on others to take care of them “pampered” themselves.
You were taught that only hard work mattered and to put your feelings aside in order to become successful in a dog-eat-dog world.
Looking back on it now I can see why self-love eluded me and why it took so long to clear the negative and critical voices from my psyche.
I had the honor of reading an advance copy Evelyn Lim’s new book, “Self-Love Secrets” recently and it was an eye-opener. I thought by this point in my life I’d gotten my s**t together and had learned to completely love and accept myself. What I learned was that I still had much to learn and a ways to go! Life is a journey they say…
Lack of self-love affects us in so many ways – from the boots up. If we’re lacking in self-love we will struggle in many areas of our lives, possibly never becoming aware that the obstacles and repeated struggles stem from a lack of self-love. We may experience issues with finances and our security, relationships and feeling worthy of love, health and an inability to recognize how our habits undermine our health and more.
I spoke to Evelyn about her new book and recorded our conversation for you here. Listen to this 13 minute interview. I guarantee you’ll be amazed how much you DON’T know about self-love.
After listening to the interview please share your reactions about self-love. Were you surprised at how the lack of self-love can manifest in your life? Do feel you may need more self-love?
Feel free to leave questions for Evelyn in the comments.

Totally with you Evelyn and Angela. Everyone is seeking love outside them but ignore the place where it resides naturally and always will whatever happens elsewhere – in yourself. The days of anything you do for the self are long gone and I personally have been highly active in self-love, self-enquiry, and self-acceptance. All keys to the peace and contentment we seek. The subject of self-help has a big clue in the title does is not?
Hi John,
How are you?
I love that – there’s a big clue in the title of “self-help.”
Yes, true. We need to tune into the self for love and acceptance before we can ever think of getting it outside ourselves..
Thanks so much for visiting and commenting John.
Hi Angela,
Self love is the core to our living a healthy life. I heard Evelyn mention that lack of self love leads to using alcohol and drugs to ease the pain. Certainly this is a cause of why people turn to outside substances rather than rely on their inner strength. When we have self love, we can give to others.
Hi Cathy,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the interview.
Of course you would totally understand how the lack of self-love can lead to drug addiction.
When we have self love we can not only take care of ourselves but others too – yes!
Thank you so much for visiting and commenting.
Thank you ladies for shedding light on such an important topic. How can we truly love anyone else until we really love ourselves? I’ve worked with many people who cannot even look at themselves in the mirror.
Thanks again. Loved the interview.

It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Thank you so much Carol. I’m glad you enjoyed the interview.
Yes, it’s true – how can we love another unless we love ourselves first?
Great point!
Thank you so much for visiting and commenting.
All my best, Angela
Hi Angela and Evelyn,
Great interview and really fun to hear both your voices. I always read your posts Evelyn and have one of your books. I’m going to have to check the other two out! I was very lucky to grow up in a family that promoted self love. I’ve tried to pass that down to my children, too.
Thanks for posting!!
Betsy
Hi Betsy,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the interview with Evelyn,
You are lucky to have grown up in that kind of family!
huh huh. You said self love. Huh huh.
It sounds like you guys did some good work. I guess I’d say the tendency in society is probably away from self love, and more toward collectively angst.
Hi Joe Bill,
I’d agree with you the majority of the world is in free-fall right now.
Collective angst is a good way to describe it.
Hello David,
Well said about the alignment with the true self. My book shares more about this, which many people do not realize.
Thank you for your love and support,
Evelyn
Hello Lance,
Thank you for your warm support and encouragement. You’ve been awesome! Hope you had a great birthday celebration. You are a true gift and inspiration to us all!
With love,
Evelyn
Thank you, Angela, for hosting the interview. It was lovely chatting with you about my thoughts and findings on self-love. May more of us come to the awareness that self-love is very much a spiritual journey that takes us to full consciousness of who we really are.
Evelyn,
I’m only too happy to share your book with the PbI audience. I truly learned a lot from your book.
As a spiritual person I tried to ignore my own self-love issue for years but, after reading your book I realize that self-love is a very important part of the path to spiritual awareness.
My journey will not be complete until I master this lesson. I thank you for opening my eyes to this.
Hi Angela and Evelyn,
Self Love hasn’t been “cool”. Self Love to me, is an awareness of self ( or lack of). The ‘symptons’ that many display have not been corrected due to their lack of correlation with self. A (deeper)understanding of this principle of self love may correct many of the symptons that people exhibit. Thank you.
be good to yourselves
Angela and Evelyn,
So great to hear both your voices – and just soak in your wonderful conversation. I love what Evelyn is doing, really creating a source of meaning for others in her Self Love book!!
Thanks so much for sharing this conversation here!!
Hi Lance,
I hope you had a marvelous birthday!
I too love what Evelyn is doing with this topic. Honestly, I never realized just how many areas of life could be affected by a lack of self-love. I’m so glad you listened to our conversation. Thank you so much for visiting and commenting. It’s always a pleasure having you stop by.
