When the doors of perception are cleansed man will see things as they truly are, infinite. –William Blake
Parents grieve for their child
They are terribly sad over the loss of their child. The child comes through. Once they hear that the child’s passing was without pain they’re relieved. The child also communicates being present at several family events that have taken place after her death. She also describes what her mother was wearing at these events. They’re elated to learn that their daughter is still with them in spirit attending these family events.
A client wants guidance about a career opportunity. She is deciding between two jobs, one involves moving to a different city. The client is leaning more toward one opportunity over the other and wants guidance about this decision.
Mediumship
The first example is of a mediumship reading for the grieving parents. People who are interested in mediumship readings want to connect with someone who has passed away. The may have experienced the loss recently and worry, like the parents in the first example, that their loved one felt pain when they crossed over. They usually want to know that their loved one is alright.
Or, they may have lost their loved one some time ago and still miss them terribly and just want to hear from them. Some people receive signs or have dreams about loved ones who passed and are curious to know whether they really do live on in another dimension and have been trying to contact them.
Spouses may want to know if they have the blessing of their departed loved one to move on in their lives and remarry and children may want to know if their parents are aware of their accomplishments.
In some cases, clients request mediumship readings hoping their loved one will give them advice on some decision they have to make. One word of caution – if your loved one didn’t give advice when they were alive, or gave bad advice, they will not have changed just because they’re now spirit. Being dead doesn’t automatically make you a wise person.
One more thing about mediumship readings. Just as in ‘life’ when you’ve stopped by to visit someone – sometimes they’re home and other times not. They may be out doing things or busy with something and not able to spend time with you. This also happens in mediumship reading sometimes.
We can’t make the person you want to communicate with come through. They still have free will – even if they no longer have a body! Sometimes, entire families and old acquaintances will come through, but not the person you hoped for.
There are a multitude of reasons to have a mediumship reading but, the basic reason is always to connect to someone who’s passed on and is now in spirit.
Intuitive or Psychic Readings
Psychic readings are used for an entirely different purpose. Most people want to know if they’re on the right path in life or if they should take certain risks to change the path they’re on. Some want to know what their purpose is and others want to know if they should marry a certain person or a buy a house, for example.
The difference
For the most part, intuitive or psychic readings involve helping a person find their way when they are at a cross road in their life.
Psychic readings differ from mediumship readings primarily because the client isn’t seeking to connect with a loved one who’s passed on.
Each has their purpose
You wouldn’t request a mediumship reading if you had questions about a decision you need to make in your life or if you wanted to know your life purpose, for example. You would ask for a psychic reading.
If you’re missing someone who has passed away and want to connect with them you’d ask for a mediumship reading.
One more point: Not every psychic is mediumistic. If you want a mediumship reading from a psychic be sure to ask if they’re also a medium.

I actually didn’t know there was a difference between mediumship and psychic readings. I intertwined the two – thinking a medium as a an open channel, and one who gives psychic readings as an open channel. You’ve made a crystal clear distinction.
🙂
Hi Aileen,
I’m finding even though I wrote this post and explained the difference people are still leaving responses about wanting answers to life’s problems with a mediumship reading. You can include a component during at the end of a mediumship where you switch to “psychic” and answer their questions, but that’s not mediumship.
I think the problem may be that many people call themselves “psychic mediums.” That is misleading because you have to be psychic to be a medium in order to communicate telepathically with a deceased person. You don’t have to be a medium though, to be a psychic. Many psychics aren’t mediums and that’s just fine too.
Hi Angela,
This all sounds so interesting. I don’t know that much about a medium reading, so appreciate your explanation on the difference.
Hi Cathy,
I’m glad you found the article interesting.
Mediumship work is fascinating. You never know who’s going to stop by.
Hi Angela:
I sometimes have used them interchangeably, but your post was a great reminder of the difference.
I have never worked with a medium, but have worked with several psychics who have sometimes touched on things from deceased relatives. I think being a psychic is rather difficult because our reality can change at any given time. I have worked with several talented psychics, but I have been given so many different realities in reading. I have notes and recordings of many different situations that never manifested. I don’t think it was because they were wrong, it is just the the path I was only changed by previous actions that were taken.
– Wendy
HI Wendy,
I like your attitude! Our reading of the present may not appear to be correct if the recipient of the reading changes their actions. So true.
Thanks so much for making this point.
What a clear description of the difference. I didn’t know. I learn so much from your blog.
Hi Galen,
I’m so glad you found the article worthwhile.
Thanks so much for visiting. I do appreciate your support.
Hi Angela,
It’s kind of funny that you wrote about this, it’s been on my mind a little the last few days. I saw your comment to Lindsay’s latest post (at The Daily Awe) about communicating with animals. You mentioned you don’t “communicate” with living ones so much but can with those that are on the other side. I think this is kind of fascinating because I can connect with both and often can’t even tell the difference! Yet I don’t consider myself a medium even though I have on occasion connected with people (or pets) who’ve passed on. I suppose, in the end, there is an overlap (which you mention) and whether we are “a medium” or not is somewhat defined by what we are best at and what we focus on. Also, like you point out, the different focus is in part determined by what the client’s objective is. Does that jibe with how you think about it?
But besides all that … This was a great article. Not only do people get confused about psychic vs. medium, but people often think channeling = mediumship as well; I know I used to. It’s so great you are explaining these things, and so well!
And finally, good luck on your facebook numbers! I’ll head over there right now. I think I’ve already liked you but I’ll check. And of course I’d love to get a mediumship reading from you! Bless you for easing peoples’ grief like I’m sure you do.
Hi Patti,
I’m glad you got a lot out of the article.
Honestly, I’ve never really tried to connect to animals so yes, I guess it does matter too on what you focus on.
I never “tried” to be a medium either though.
I was doing psychic readings and every now and again I’d have a spirit show up. I had now idea that’s what mediumship was.
This was about 12 years ago when I began noticing that it was happening more frequently. It happened in the past, but I dismissed to “reading people’s minds about lost loved ones.”
Now, I focus a lot on mediumship and missing person’s cases. Animals do come through at times.
I was always confused about channeling versus mediumship too. I understand the difference now.
I think that if you have a talent like animal communication you’re really blessed. How I love my pets!
I’m glad you entered too! Thank you so much for visiting and commenting.
Hi Angela, thank you for writing this! I’m only just starting to learn about intuition and I found your explanation very clear and helpful. It definitely has made some of the information that’s swirling around in my head seem a little less chaotic! It’s very interesting for me to learn about all of these specialized skills. There’s so much I don’t know, but I’m very excited to learn!
Hi Judy,
It’s so nice to meet you.
I’m glad you found this explanation helpful.
It’s good to know you’re open to learning too~!
I think that’s a good distinction. I see mediumship as “talking to dead people” whereas I see being psychic more as “open to the impressions of the universe which is much larger than dead people”. Psychic stuff is like looking at a prism perhaps, whereas mediumship is more like looking at an aura–only of something that was once alive. Prophecy is a different ball game yet, where one is speaking on behalf of “high spirits”.
I tend to think that if parents are grieving, in most instances it is unwise of them to try to talk to what has left. I think they have MORE difficulty letting go frequently, and I think it tends to cast “crap” on the medium because people see the medium as being opportunistic by trying to make money off of pain. I know that isn’t true in all cases, but I do think it is a big, huge, pitfall.
I know of one lady who lost her son in a car wreck, and basically has beaten down the doors of every spiritual practitioner around. I suspected from the beginning that no answers would come for her until she “let go”. She was too close to it, had her hands wrapped around it too tightly. I often see people do this when they lose people they love. It all depends on the path, but the usual answer is that if you hold something EXTREMELY tightly, then you probably have some spiritual friction you need to work on to ensure your attitude is right.
Hi Joe,
Nice to meet you.
I think your distinction between mediumship and the psychic readings is correct.
I’m not agreement with you about readings for grieving parents though. I’ve seen it bring much comfort.
It’s really up to the individual who’s in pain. If an individual is addicted to readings then yes – they do need to let go.
Thank you for sharing your viewpoint with us.
Hi Angela,
There was a time when I didn’t know the difference between the two either. I have a Psychic friend who does both. One time she was doing a reading for my Aunt and the words coming out of her mouth was in Italian.
She was channeling my Great-grandmother.
Hi Justin,
That’s amazing! I’m sure your aunt was overwhelmed when your friend spoke in Italian.
Very interesting to hear your definition. I’d never thought much about it! I’d love to enter although I’m already a facebook fan.
Betsy,
You can still enter if you’ve already “Liked” the PbI page on Facebook! Please go ahead and enter.
Hey, good post. You need to talk more about your mediumship abilities.
Thanks so much Rosemarie. I hope I see you tomorrow!
I was always confused by the differences between each of those types of readings.
Thanks for clarifying them. I work with a number of behavior and motivation assessments so sometimes clients think we are psychic, but I know that’s far from the truth. I have no psychic abilities whatsover, I wouldn’t even know how to begin.
Very interesting post,
Bryce
Hi Bryce,
I’m glad I was able to help sort this out for you. I love that your clients think your psychic too.
Hey there Angela,
Great description of the differences! I am so used to being well-versed in this stuff now that I forget that it wasn’t too long ago that I didn’t know the difference between the two. So, thank you!
Also, good luck with reaching 1,000 “likes” by the 22nd. I’ve got all the faith in the world that you will!
Hi Lindsay,
Thank you. You’re a doll! I have a book coming out soon so I want to be sure I can get the word out about it.
I truly appreciate your support.
xoxo,
Angela
Nice article. I had noticed people offering intuitive readings but wasn’t quite sure what that was all about. Your explanation makes perfect sense. What type of abilities do people giving intuitive readings typically have? Is an intuitive reading dependent on psychic abilities?
Hi Anne,
It’s so nice meeting you.
I use the word “intuitive” very loosely.
I’ve found that a lot of main stream readers are turned off by the word “psychic” but open to the word intuitive, so I’ve been using it instead. I honestly don’t know what an intuitive reader does. I tend to think that most people calling themselves intuitive are psychics really. Psychics are typically clairvoyant, clairaudient, clairsentient and claircognizant in some combination.
Interesting. I didn’t know the difference before now, but I suppose it makes sense.
Can everyone that is a medium also function as a psychic? Or are they mutually exclusive?
Hi Fred,
You bring up a good point. Not all psychics are mediumistic but all mediums are psychic.
Does that make sense? You have to be psychic to reach beyond this dimension and communicate telepathically with a spirit person.
I have always been psychic but I began to notice that very gradually in the last 15 years I would have spirits drop by to my readings.
At first I had no idea what was happening. I assumed I was reading the client’s mind and bringing forth a memory of someone they loved who’d passed. With time it finally dawned on me that I had mediumship abilities.
Good question~!
Angela, this was brilliant. I didn’t know the difference between mediumship and psychic readings until now, and I thank you for clarifying the distinctions here.
I haven’t had any readings done for me, but I know of their nature, and this post has certainly raised my interest a little bit!
Thanks for sharing this Angela 🙂
HI Stuart,
I’m glad you found the article informative. You’re not alone.
Most people have no idea about how the two differ.
If I can ever be of service to you let me know.
Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting.
