Face your fears and do it anyway

3 Ways Fear Keeps You From Succeeding in Life, Career & Sales

Have you ever been frozen in your tracks by fear? Or woken up in the middle of the night because of fear?

Fear keeps you from succeeding in whatever goals you have in life, business, career and in selling your products and services especially if you’re a heart-centered. It stops you cold from living up to your potential and keeps you playing small. And guess what happens next? You’re stuck spinning in the fear not moving toward your goal and losing valuable time in your life.

3 Ways Fear Stops You From Succeeding

1.The trap of fearful thoughts

You know you’ve been hit by a wave of fear when your internal dialogue sounds something like this: “I’m going to fail; I can’t do it; I’m not an expert, I’m not good enough; I’m not perfect enough; I’m a fraud; No one will buy from me; There’s never enough!” Thoughts like these replay in a loop and hold you hostage from taking the right actions to get where you want to go, instead you play small and hide.

2. Negative emotions impair your thinking

Negative Emotions such as fear and anger, angst, anxiety, fright, horror, terror and panic keep you locked in the vortex. The emotions turn on the body’s fight or flight response which is a reaction by the nervous system to threats to survival. These threats can be real or imagined, it doesn’t matter. The fight or flight response releases hormones to prime the body to either run or fight off the threat. Once your body is flooded by stress hormones your thinking is temporarily impaired.

If the stress let’s up in a short period, having impaired higher functions of reason and logical thinking isn’t a major problem. But when negative emotions become a chronic state of being then it becomes a huge problem. If you can’t think or reason properly you’re not going to make rational effective decisions. And without right decisions you won’t take the right action steps so you’re likely to make the situation worse.

3. Painful memories from your past

Old memories of events that triggered similar negative emotions and thoughts are likely to bubble up during fearful times. Remembering times you were scared and afraid you were going to fail only pushes you down further into the vortex. The memories put your habitual negative thoughts and emotions on hyper-drive and the vicious cycle continues.

Top fears

The most common fears people have are public speaking, sales and speaking up. If you have fear around speaking in front of groups for your job or selling products and services for either your employer or your own company, it will affect your success rate. The fear of speaking up will hold you back from asking for a raise or charging what you’re worth for your own services as well.

Example: Say your top is fear selling. You pick up the phone to call a prospect aware that you’re feeling anxious. The moment you’re aware of feeling anxious your body has already sent a cocktail of stress hormones into your blood stream. The stress hormones impair your higher functions of thinking and communicating, which is why things go south in the sales conversation very quickly!

When you’re afraid you will hear your own thoughts over what the person is saying. When that happens you’re not fully present because you’re focused on what to say next, not on the person you’re in a conversation with. The person senses you’re not really listening and then you sense the disconnect with the prospect. Then you start thinking, “This isn’t going well. I’m not going to be able to do this.” or “Ugh, I hate sales! Why am I doing this?”  And then the call crashes and burns which only serves to make you feel worse about yourself and imprint the fear and aversion to selling even more deeply.

You’ve got to learn how to shrink the fear so it stops hijacking your success!

How to stop fear from sabotaging your success in life, career and sales

To beat fear you need to have the tools to deal with it when it strikes. You must create a habit around using these tools to systematically stop the fear from stopping you in your tracks. Try using some of these tool to put fear in its place and reach your potential.

  1. Breathe. When you feel the fear set in take a moment to focus on your breathing. Taking in 3 – 5 breaths slowly, holding them in for few seconds and releasing them slowly will calm you down.
  2. Meditate. Learn how to meditate and make a daily practice of doing it. You need to know how to go into a calm state before the fear hits. It’s much harder to meditate when you’re already deeply engulfed in a state of fear and anxiety.
  3. Journal. Get in touch with your intuitive self and ask for advice. Answer an open ended question such as: What is the first step I can take to handle this situation? You’ll be surprised at how much wisdom pours out of you onto the page.

5 Steps to Stay Positive When Around Negative People

5 Steps to Stay Positive When Around Negative People

How to Stay Positive When Your Around Negative PeopleDo you find it difficult to stay positive when you’re surrounded by negativity?

I’m opening up the Powered by Intuition Mailbag to share the answer to a question from a reader who asked how she “could stay positive and in a state of gratitude when she was surrounded by negativity.

Answer:

If you’re living in the midst of a situation that’s negative it’s very hard to stay upbeat and positive all the time.

And whether it’s in your home, workplace or within a social group it’s going to affect you.

The way to rise above the negativity is to become conscious that you have a choice in how you react. The moment you become aware that you don’t have to react to negativity your mind has expanded.

When I first began my journey with personal development and found out that I didn’t have to think the thoughts that just “popped” into my head but could CHOOSE my thoughts, it blew my mind! Wow!

You could almost hear the “screech marks” as the wild negative and sabotaging thoughts came to a halt in my mind that very instant.

“You mean I can decide what I’m going to think about,” I thought? This was a revelation.

So, what I want to say to you is that the first step in overcoming anything in your life always begins with mastering your thoughts. Everything we do in life begins on the “inside.”

Now you might be thinking, “That’s hard!”

And, I won’t sugar coat it….it is hard. You have to want it – bad. You have to desire to change more than you desire to stay stuck where you are in the negativity of whatever the situation is.

You also have to be disciplined and commit to doing it and be consistent about doing it.

Here are 5 steps to maintain your positivity when you’re around negative people:

1. To shield yourself from absorbing negativity focus on the things you’re grateful for in your life. To do that though, you must first “interrupt” the thoughts that have taken control of your mind.

2. To do this use what’s called a “pattern interrupt.” This is when you deliberately take an action to switch gears on your thinking. Using this is like applying the “brakes” to a runaway train.

When you take control of the train you can direct it to go where you want to go. And this is exactly what you want to do with your thinking; take control of it. When you’re in control and direct it you consciously decide what you want in your life rather than being a victim of life and taking whatever comes along.

3. Pick a prayer you like or a mantra you know well. I like using either the “Lord’s Prayer,” or a mantra from “Ho’oponopono” which is, “I’m sorry. Forgive me. Thank you. I love you,” when I want to interrupt and halt a negative thought pattern that’s stampeding through my mind.

Depending on the situation I might use this mantra from Sahaja Yoga instead: “I forgive. I forgive everyone including myself.”
.
4. Once you take back control of your mind and calm down again you can think rationally about the situation and decide how to respond and what you’re going to do rather than react on autopilot. You can take an inventory and see how much good there really is in your life and focus on that instead. Remember what you focus on expands.
.
As you make a habit out of interrupting the negative thought patterns you’ll also be breaking the “circuit” that has you automatically become upset.
.

5. Overriding the body’s stress response means you’re mastering your thoughts. You’re now fully conscious to the process that was hijacking your mind and can put a stop to it. That’s being a victor instead of a victim.

BONUS STEP!

If you use one of these steps you’ll get your mind off of the negativity and start to neutralize the negative emotions that are activating the stress response in your body eventually. I say eventually because without a technique to reset the nervous system’s ingrained response it’s going to take longer.
 .
When the stress response (fight or flight response) in your body is triggered you feel anxious, scared, overwhelmed, upset and fearful and you’re ready to react at a hair trigger.
.
You’re body pumps cortisol into your bloodstream to prepare you for a “fight or flight” so you can protect yourself from danger. If this same “danger” (what you’re calling a negative environment/person) appears in your life again and again your “fight or flight” response will be set off at the mere sight or thought of this negativity. This powerful reaction becomes ingrained within your nervous system and hijacks your emotions and behavior unconsciously.
 .
When this happens you’ll have an uphill battle trying to maintain your positivity because it’s no longer just a “mental” challenge to change your thinking but a physically ingrained habit within your nervous system that you have to restore to “neutral.” The fastest way to reset the response from your nervous system is to use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping.
.
