Why “Saying Yes to Change” Is Good For The Soul

  • Sharebar

Can “Saying Yes to Change” be good for the soul?

Change really is the only constant in life. All species must evolve or die— When we change we grow and when we grow we evolve mentally, emotionally and spiritually. My good friend Alex Blackwell has written a deeply moving book about his journey to change. See for yourself….

Alex, can you give readers a little background on The BridgeMaker? What made you want to start blogging?

I started blogging by accident. Several years ago my wife decided to go to graduate school. Our time together diminished so she could attend class, write papers, etc. Other than sports, I’m not a big television person. So, I had to find a way to fill the time.

I’ve always had the itch to write, but honestly lacked the discipline to do it consistently. One Saturday afternoon when Mary Beth was buried in a paper, I was surfing the net and typed in “how to start a blog.” When I discovered how easy, and inexpensive, it was to start a blog, I was hooked.

Blogging offers a write-as-you-go-approach that is comfortable.  I haven’t stopped blogging, or writing, since that fateful Saturday.

How does the name “The Bridgemaker” tie into your focus?

The BridgeMaker connects people who are looking to walk by faith, share inspiration and celebrate positive change. The meaning of the blog’s name comes from becoming aware of where we are today and seeing where we want to be tomorrow and then making the deliberate choice to cross the bridge to discover the beautiful life waiting for us there.

What compelled you to write, “Saying Yes to Change?”

The book has been inside me for a long time.

Writing every day for my blog did two things: It made me a better writer, and it helped me find my voice. With a new found confidence in my writing, along with the positive reactions I was getting from readers, I felt the time was right to write the book.

The book is a heartfelt recounting of my best advice on building healthy relationships, learning to love yourself and being a positive force in the world. My book was not only inspired by my blog; it was inspired by seeing the positive difference I was making.

Who will benefit from reading this and how can this book help readers?

“Saying Yes to Change: 10 Timeless Life Lessons for Creating Positive Change” is for anyone who feels the nudge to change; and it’s for people who are already walking the paths to positive change. If you feel stuck, alone or scared, the book will inspire you to acknowledge what you need to heal or change so you can begin living a happier, more meaningful life – right now.

I really enjoyed getting to know more about you in the book. You reveal a lot of personal details about your life. Was that hard or painful for you?

It was a little of both Angela.

The purpose behind my personal approach is to provide a properly-sized window into my life so others can see their lives in the reflection of the window’s glass. Often we feel like we are alone with our thoughts, feelings or fears. But by being honest with how I feel, may give someone the encouragement to be honest with their feelings, too.

Do you have a favorite chapter in the book? Which one and why?

I think the chapter (or lesson) that seems to provide its power to me whenever I need it most and makes me feel strong on the days I feel weak is Lesson Nine: Take Down the White Flag.

I’m tempted to raise the white flag in defeat when I begin listening to the enemy of my soul. The enemy waits patiently and then whispers the lie he knows will persuade me to give up: “You don’t deserve it. You can’t possibly achieve it. So, why bother?

But, today I’m learning to replace the lie with the truth. When I do this, I’m able to take down the white flag and replace it with a beautiful, new flag.

If readers take away only one thing from this book what should it be?

Creating positive change begins with discovering one powerful truth: You cannot change or heal what you do not acknowledge.

How do you apply the ten lessons to your life on a daily basis?

My path to positive change is a constant journey. I don’t think I have arrived, or that I am “fixed.” So, I keep each lesson close to my heart every day. And on the days when I feel uninspired, defeated or frustrated, I do review each lesson and pick one that I think we help me get back on track.

What are you goals for The BridgeMaker? Are there any more books in your future?

The BridgeMaker will be a part of my life for a long time to come. I would like the blog to become more community-owned and less Alex-owned. By that I mean, I want people to use it as platform where they can share and connect with each other. This can be accomplished by submitting posts, commenting on posts and sharing the blog’s message with others.

What final message would you like to leave readers with?

Keep your faith strong and believe you are worthy to receive your heart’s desire!

Thank you Angela for your wonderful support.

Alex, my friend, it’s my pleasure!

  5. “You cannot change or heal what you do not acknowledge.” Heck yeah! Awareness is fundamental to any change process. Change without awareness is the hard path of resistance, for sure (in my humble experience ;)
